The 17's tend to favor the mids without being nasal while the treble sounds even without being overly bright or harsh.
The speakers themselves don't have alot of bass as you'd expect from the size and that is why I got the PSW 3 at the same time. I listen to a mix of classic rock, jazz and symphonic music. I have them set up at ear level when I sit in front of a computer monitor and they are about 3 feet away from my ears. Long live the memory of Henry Kloss!įor the size and price, these are pretty good speakers! I have them hooked to a NAD L-40 receiver and a CSW Powered Subwoofer III. Perhaps that testifies to owners not wanting to part with them. For that you would obviously turn to other Kloss designs, but which ones? The CSW Model Six (pre-Chinese) or Ensemble or Ensemble II are possibilities, or perhaps the Tower, which I haven't heard.Of course Kloss has passed away and these designs are no longer made but you can pick them up on ebay. These are pretty cheap speakers and my final impression of them is that they tantalize: they make you want to hear a more expensive version of themselves. You can use them against a wall to help the bass, but don't position them where you'll lose the clarity of sound that Kloss built into them. The bass for these speakers is obviously compromised. It is guaranteed to wow whoever listens to it. If you have a pair of these and want to sell them for a lot of money invest in a copy of the Smith disc. And they sound fantastic on Jimmy Smith's "Walk on the Wild Side" a piece for jazz band with a lot of brass and drums. They have the best channel separation of all the speakers I have owned, for some reason.
First of all, like all Kloss designs, they are very tight and cohesive ('fast') sounding. But the CSR 17s have certain traits that are remarkable.

They are much closer to a full range speaker and were much more expensive if you do the inflation calculation. The KLH speakers are much bigger and will go deeper and play louder. Note that these speakers are not at all like the KLH 17s that Kloss designed. They are certainly not high end speakers even with a subwoofer, but they testify to the genius of their designer Henry Kloss. I wanted to weigh in on these speakers because they are noteworthy. I put down 2000 for model year but that's just a guess.
